Updates

Due to work being childish and blocking many important websites, like Blogspot, Facebook and Porn, this is going to be a very quick recap of our last 3 matches.

Vs Panthers (1 August 2007)

Coming back from the holidays, we were faced with a match against the Panthers. With the long break not being conducive to keeping fit and practicing (for some of us), this was going to be a tight game in order to keep the forwards close to the break down.

Panthers drew the first blood after about 15 minutes of play, but the try was unconverted. 0-5

Then, shortly after the restart, Mike Bentley did something near the ruck (awesome description) and ran 50m for a brilliant individual try. AB converted. 5-7

Taking this narrow lead into half time meant to a very tough second half, with big hits and solid defense coming from both sides. Then with a the time ticking down on the clock, the Panthers scored to take the lead, 7-10, and then as if to rub salt into out wounds scored another on with a minute to go to deny us of a bonus point.

Final score 7-15

Vs Eastern Cape to Rios (8 August)

After the previous week’s performance, against strong team, we were confident coming in to this game, but were not prepared for what happened.

After spending plenty of time in our half, Hutch managed to cross the line after a quickly taken 22 Drop off to give us a 5-0 lead.

Easterns were the next to score making it 5-5.

Ivan scored the next try, after some brilliant work by the forwards to get us close to the Easterns line. 10-5 (Apparently AB id not have his kicking boots on)

Going into half time with a 1 try advantage was a bit of a worry, because the wind was now pumping into our faces. However, the second half saw 3 unanswered tries by Donovan, Hutch and Igor (??).

Final score 27-5

Vs Spanners (15 August)

Guys, brilliant game, though it was against weaker opposition, it was fantastic to see the ball getting thrown around like that. No long match report here because it would take too long.

Oh yes, I think Igor may have got one as well, but don’t worry, he WILL tell you if he did.

The Wildboys' management is currently trying to organise a 7-a-side tournament for next term at varsity.

Round 5

For those of you who weren't there, the plan was to have a braai and watch some rugga, as we had a bye. However, this was not the case, half of the guys there ended up playing games for some of the less privileged teams.

Jono played a full game for College, who were mauled rather badly by the Nadoes. Not surprising looking at the College warm up, which was pretty much every player doing there own thing up until 5mins before kick-off when a "maybe we should practice some lineouts" was thrown into the mix!

While Simon, Max, Neal and Sean had a bit of run for Ikhaya who had (insert number here) tries scored against them by the Baa Baas. I actually lost count, so any amount will be ok. Come to think of it, I don't even know if Ikhaya got out of their own half. It's a bit of a pity to see a new team taking so much punishment, but I guess the PRE-match pizza and beers is not the best warm up in the world!

Following these games, the braai was had, with the smoke drifting over the field making it look something like Christchurch at last years super 14 final. The refs job was made even more difficult here with the both Clarendon and Ubombo were wearing very similar Black/Dark Blue kit (I think that more thought should go into teams kit colour next year by having some sort of allocation system.)

Now for the long break until our next game. Sunday practices will still be happening, with a good turnout yesterday.

Round 4

Let us have a look at our round 4 game.

Straight from the kick off, we were camping in the Ikhaya half. How this did not convert to points is due to final passes not going to hand or not being passed at all, Ivan's drop goal attempt could also be included in this.

Anyway, about 5 minutes before half time, after a string of 10 phases, with the ball being driving up the middle, thrown left and right across the field, a 3 0n 2 overlap was converted into a try with Sean "Moooostache" Hutch scoring under the posts for our first try of the season.

Following the kick of, the forwards took the ball up through Bruce "I hate to run with the ball" to gain 10 meters (out of his 238.75 metres gained during the game, so much for "Don't run so far during shadow! It's not realistic!"). The ball was then chipped over the flat Ikhaya back line into space and was collected on the second bounce. The ball then went through numerous pairs of hands before Ross "Junior" Main Sheard threw a dummy, to nobody, to open the gap so he could score under the posts. Try 2 for the season.

The second started in pretty much the same manner as the first. Then Ikhaya scored 2 intercept tries, which put us slightly on the back foot, until Bruce , in another storming run up the middle, dotted the ball under the sticks. Try 3

Following this, the ball was thrown around a little too recklessly in search of the illusive 4th bonus point try. Which in the end did not materialise leaving the final score at a pretty convincing 24-12, considering that all Ikaya's points were scored against the run of play (Much like the way Stormer's points are scored).

All in all, a good performance with very good defence and awsome work upfront by the forwards giving the speedy backline the opportunity to throw the ball around. It's nice to see a game plan being stuck to for once.

So this week we have a bye, then we are playing the Panthers, so there better be a good turn out for practice on Sunday. Last year we narrowly lost to them, so this year a big win would be nice. High Five!

Next, we are planning a bit of a mid season braai/fines meeting up at the UCT tennis club, so I need you guys to start thinking of a good date for that.

Lastly, a big thanks to those of you who joined us for the swim yesterday. It's good to see that level of commitment with 20 odd people being there. That thanks is not extended to Igor and Justin, that is very Abbo to leave early. Where you scared of getting your R300 000 cars dirty??

Round 3

Hmmm, 29-zip, sounds like a Stormers score? Anyway, I wasn't there so I can't really comment on what happened. This is how the round went for other teams and how the log now looks. So it means, that if we can win both of our next match, with a good points difference, we can get into second spot.

Now, the "Pink Gloves Award" are going to go. The reason for this is that the Shebeen Boys already have a pink shorts system, so it would be a bit Abbo to copy it. A suggestion was that we make the player winning the award play the following weeks game in a Stormers rugby jersey, but after some consultation it was decided that nobody could ever pull of something that would warrant them that amount of shame. Thus the suggestion for the Wig Of Destiny (WOD) to be used. For those of you who were at Stumble on Saturday, you will know what I am talking about.

Game 1

Ok guys. Going down to Ubumbo 17-3 not the worst result. They won team of the week so I think we can be relatively happy with our performance. Obviously some early season issues that need to be sorted out, but we have a three week break until our next game to sort this out, which is on 9 May at 18:00 against the Purple Cobras.

So, as it stands, the pools look like this:

Next thing. Camping and Paintball this weekend. Hopefully many of you guys are going to pull through. A few fun activities have been planned for the evening. Bring with your booze and food if you want. For paintball, only shorts and shirts are allowed, none of this rubbish long jean pant and tops.

Lastly, I need nominations for the "Pink Gloves Award", please list your nominations and resons for the award in the comments section. Nominations will be voted on at the pre-match practices on Sundays. For those of you that don't know the person that does the most noteworthy thing leading up to a game (be it on or off the rugby field), will be forced to play with bright pink gloves for that week's game. So guys, lets see those nominations, I'm sure we will have a few after the weekend.
